who we are
EYP is a design firm dedicated to creating better places to live, work, and learn. We work collaboratively in interdisciplinary teams of architects, planners and engineers to respond to design challenges with intellectual rigor, imagination and clear communication. We approach design as an intellectual exercise combining creativity, program-specific knowledge and technical expertise.

Design excellence, systems integration, client service, and sustainability are the cornerstones of our practice. We cultivate a spirit of innovation, collaboration, respect, and individual growth.

We design buildings for people: citizens, public servants, students, scholars. We work collaboratively with our clients and our colleagues to create places that welcome, inspire and challenge.

history

the 1970s
Steve Einhorn and Eric Yaffee established the practice in Albany, NY in 1972. Before the decade was over, they had thirty employees and Andy Prescott had joined them as a partner. Our early commitment to sustainability resulted in recognition from Scientific American magazine and the prestigious Owens Corning Energy Conservation Award for a new airport terminal in Albany.

the 1980s

The ’80s were marked by steady growth. Recognizing the value of integrated design, we added in-house engineers, interior designers, and graphic designers. We opened an office in Washington, DC. Our transformation of Albany’s abandoned historic Union Station for Fleet Bank garnered the first-ever adaptive-use award from the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Our focus on education intensified with extensive K-12 work and higher education projects throughout the Northeast.

the 1990s

Rapid growth characterized the ’90s, with the addition of offices in Boston and New York City. We sharpened our focus to provide the highest quality comprehensive design services to government and education clients, such as Harvard University, Georgetown University, Swarthmore College and the University of Michigan. Our science and technology work for colleges and universities became nationally recognized. The decade of the ‘90s also saw the creation of a new division – EYP Mission Critical Facilities, which quickly became the leading service provider for corporate financial, telecommunications and computer/internet mission critical facilities. Now an independent company, you can visit them at: www.eypmcf.com.

the new century

In 2001, Steve Einhorn, Eric Yaffee and Andy Prescott transferred leadership of the firm to a new generation. With new leadership came a new, integrated organization, building on the firm's record of design excellence, integrated architecture and engineering, energy consulting and client service. Our portfolio of completed work continues to expand with new buildings at American University, Swarthmore College, Hamilton College, the US embassy in Panama and major renovations at the United Nations Headquarters, Birch Bayh Courthouse in Indiana and the Washington State Legislative Building. Our practice continues to expand with our increased focus on energy consulting and master planning.
