Earlier this month, EYP Principal and Director of Historic Preservation Mark Thaler and Principal and Director of Engineering Peter Ottavio presented “Weaving New Systems into Historic Structures: No Room For Error” at the Spring Traditional Building Conference in Boston, MA. The session discussed the HVAC systems necessary for restoring buildings that were not originally designed to meet 21st-century technology, life-safety, and accessibility requirements. Thaler and Ottavio also explored the collaborative relationship between architects and engineers working on historic preservation or adaptive reuse projects, as well as creative strategies for balancing historic preservation design with integration of complex engineering systems.
