University of Iowa Restoration
Honored with National SCUP Award
The Society for College and University Planning (SCUP), one of the nation’s most prominent C&U organizations, in association with the American Institute of Architects and the Committee on Architecture for Education, recently selected EYP and Iowa-based OPN Architects as the recipients of the 2007 Honor Award for Excellence in Architecture for Restoration or Preservation. The team’s project, the restoration of the historic Old Capital building at the University of Iowa, will be honored at SCUP’s annual conference in July. Originally constructed in 1839, the building served as Iowa’s first State Capitol, and eventually, the first building owned by the University of Iowa. Coinciding with the abatement of hazardous materials in preparation for a set of building upgrades, a tragic 2001 fire destroyed the building’s gold leaf dome and related structures. These events led to the major restoration, including the reconstruction of the dome, cupola, and bell tower, roof replacement, smoke and water damage repairs, tuck-pointing, and ADA-compliant renovations.
