NOAA Satellite Operations
Facility Celebrates Dedication
On June 11th, EYP, Morphosis, NOAA, and GSA celebrated the grand opening of the NOAA (National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration) Satellite Operations Facility (NSOF) in Suitland, MD. The ribbon-cutting ceremony and reception were attended by U.S. Senators Barbara Mikulski and Ben Cardin, both from Maryland, as well as Vice Admiral Conrad Lautenbacher (Ret.), Under Secretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere, and David Winstead, Commissioner for GSA’s Public Buildings Service. The NSOF houses 459 employees, and provides around-the-clock operations, processing more than 16 billion bytes of environmental satellite data a day, including severe weather, climate prediction, and hurricane tracking. The facility, which spans 208,271 gross square feet, supports more than $50 million of high technology equipment, including 16 antennas that control more than $4.7 billion worth of environmental spacecraft. At the ceremony, the design team of Morphosis/EYP was complimented for its innovations in energy and engineering design, and for providing NOAA with “a world class facility”.
