Traditional Building Conference Features
Two EYP Historic Preservation Experts
At the 2008 Traditional Building Conference in Boston, two of EYP’s historic preservation experts – and regular speakers at the annual Traditional Building event – were notably featured. Representing the New England Chapter of DOCOMOMO and the Boston Preservation Alliance, Principal David Fixler served on the panel, “Government Center: Brutalist Planning in the Heart of Boston.” The speakers explored the redevelopment plan for Boston ’s Government Center , including design goals, civic objectives, and an overall study of the building’s historic urban intervention. Another EYP speaker, Principal Mark Thaler, presented a case study on the restoration of the South Side of Ellis Island, including the facility’s historic background, the challenges of restoring historically significant buildings on an island, and the unique relationship between the National Park Service and the Save Ellis Island organization. Additionally, Thaler served on the judging panel for the Palladio Awards, (an award which EYP previously won), a program that honors outstanding achievement in traditional design. The awards were presented at this year’s Traditional Building Conference.
