At the Concrete and Cast Stone in the 21st Century: Design, Preservation, and Care of Contemporary and Historic Architecture Conference in Cambridge, MA, Principal and Historic Preservation Expert David Fixler, FAIA, LEED AP presented a case study on the use of cast stone and concrete at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The two-day event explored the basic material of properties of concrete and cast stone, the role of mechanical, thermal, and water absorption properties on performance and durability, and the effects of environmental conditions on both traditional buildings, monuments, and sculpture and on modern structures and their ornamentation.
