The new observation tower establishes a monumental dialogue with its surroundings through a prominent vertical element. In function, the creation of a learning facility of interactive exchange gives new meaning to the relationship between the existing power company, visitors, and the City of Ames, Iowa.
As a formal reference to the verticality of the existing power plant, the tower’s form captures the essence of movement across Iowa’s vast plains, becoming an iconic beacon at the “Heart of the Heartland.” Similar to monuments such as the St. Louis Arch, the Ames Landmark Tower’s gentle sculptural form is a distinguished presence within the surrounding landscape and skyline.
The project transforms the existing parcel in front of the power plant into an open landscaped area, strengthening the connection to the adjacent public park. A structural “arterial” network arises above the existing plant to support the body of the tower. Clad in translucent high density polycarbonate panels, the tower body retains open ends at the bottom and top. Shaped by the changing wind patterns, exhaust from the plant’s cooling units either escapes around the open base of the structure or diffuses through perforations in the tower body – creating an ethereal halo around the tower. During the day, the tower’s form reads as a gentle gesture against the skyline; upon nightfall, different instances of lighting effects dynamically highlight the tower’s structure and skin.
A new information kiosk will greet visitors who may then progress to two separate destinations. The upper observation level provides a cantileveried open air structure , while a gallery interactive display and presentation area afford the space for the power company to establish a new Interactive Learning Center for students and visitors alike.
