National Purple Heart Hall of Honor New Windsor, NY
New Museum Honoring Purple Heart Recipients
The new 8,200 square foot Purple Heart Hall of Honor is designed to expland the visitor center and house historic artifacts and interpretive displays where American soliders camped in a military cantonment from April 1782 to August 1783 during the American Revolution. The museum also displays information pertaining to the Medal of Merit, now commonly known as the Purple Heart. The new facility is organized in three interlinked forms that frame a ceremonial grass courtyard and terraced seating area. Visitors enter the main gallery under a broad projecting roof covering a long and narrow hall designed in the manner of nearby wood covered bridges that spans from the Reception Room and gift shop to the large Exhibit gallery towards the back of the site.
Within the entrance gallery, a timeline depicting the number of medal recipients over the course of history stands opposite a wall of glass providing iews to the landscape and the ceremonial court. The main exhibit gallery and multi-function space houses both a series of interpretive "drums", and nine computer stations to be used by individuals and families to connect to associated digital archives pertaining to the history of the Purple Heart medal and recipients.
