Built in 1915, this centerpiece of the Harvard library system houses approximately 3.5 million volumes, the largest library collection in private hands in the world. With the completion of Phase I of its renovation, the invaluable collection is protected by modern systems that regulate temperature, humidity, air-quality, and ultraviolet light, and provide fire protection. Two new reading rooms, created within the "found space" of the library's central light wells, provide additional study areas and a place for patrons to access protected collections.
